Leatherback Turtles have made the Northwest side of Tobago one of their nesting grounds for millions of years.
Nesting season begins in March.

Tobago is the Island of Robinson Crusoe, and has been the location of many classic movies and films worldwide.

Trinidad and Tobago is also home to many rare species of plants and fauna.
Trinidad and Tobago enjoy the oldest protected virgin rain forest in the Western Hemisphere.
Tobago is well known in the diving world for its protected reefs and exceptional dive sites.

HISTORY

National Geographic has often featured Trinidad & Tobago for its 430 species of birds, and over 600 species of butterflies.

Trinidad and Tobago is also home to many rare and endangered mammals.

Tobago was politically amalgamated with Trinidad, and after the break-up of the West Indian Federation the islands were granted full independence on August 31, 1962.

The first oil deposits were discovered in 1866 and by 1908 crude oil production began.

In 1912, the first oil refinery in Trinidad was established. In 1954, marine drilling began off the west coast of the Trinidad.

Tobago changed hands more than any other Caribbean Island; about 30 times before finally settling into British rule in 1814.

NATIVE PEOPLES & MYTHS

Christopher Columbus made a vow, before he set sail, to name the first land he discovered after the Blessed Trinity. Trinidad is Spanish for Trinity.

Tobago was named after its shape which resembles a tobacco pipe, used by its endogenous people.

"Rum & Coca-Cola": The Favorite Combination for our rum, just ahead of Rum Punch.

It was also the inspiration for the 1940's song of the same title.

Tobago's first exports: Tobacco, Rum, Sugar, Ginger and Pepper.

Angostura Bitters is one of our current world renowned exports. It is the ingredient that distinguishes a good rum punch from a great rum punch.

The island's indigenous tribal people, were the Arawak and the Carib Indians.

There is a saying that the elder natives, from other islands, would make their journey to Tobago to spend their last days.

They believed Tobago was Paradise.
